Thursday
Thursday we visited the island of Corfu, which is known as the Capri of Greece. It was by far the greenest place we saw. It had lots of olive and cypress trees, just gorgeous.
The first place we went to was an old Byzantine Monastery established in the 13th century. We walked around and soaked in the gardens and the ambience. It is still inhabited by monks. Jenny lit two candles for which John made fun of her, but it wasn't for any religious experience, just for contemplation. Most of the artwork was done in the middle ages. While as Latter-Day Saints we may not agree with the subject matter, they were still incredible works of art.
Cell block where the monks live.
Inside the Church
Next we saw the Achilleon Palace, which was built by Elizabeth of Austria in 1896. After her death in 1899 it ws turned into a casino and fell into disrepair and is being renovated back to its original glory. She had dedicated her palace to Achilles, hence the name.
Outside of palace
Statue of Achilles in the Garden. From feet to tip of spear it's about 22 ft.
Dying Achilles
Jenny posing with one of the muses.
After the palace we headed over to Old Town Corfu which was a wonderful Venetian city and walked around and had some lunch. If we ever have the chance to go back I would love to spend some more time there shopping.
The fruits and vegetables in Europe were so fresh! We just couldn't get enough.
